United Way of Bartholomew County is thrilled to introduce Kathryn McCarthy as the new Chair of LEAD United.
LEAD United is a Philanthropic Society that concentrates on homelessness prevention in our community.
Here is a statement from Kathryn:
I grew up in Flossmoor, Illinois, a diverse suburb just south of Chicago where community involvement was woven into everyday life. That environment shaped who I am today. When I moved to Columbus, Indiana in 2013 to begin my career at Cummins, I quickly realized that while the community was welcoming, the representation and perspectives I was used to were not as visible here. That difference sparked a deeper commitment in me—to be part of building a stronger, more inclusive community.
Since then, I’ve dedicated both my professional and personal life to that mission. At Cummins, I’ve worked in Power Systems Engineering and taken every opportunity to advocate for diverse voices, including leading our University of Illinois recruiting efforts—my alma mater—so future engineers see a path forward that includes them. I’m also proud to represent Cummins in our partnership with Girls Inc. of Jackson County, where I help improve and expand STEM programming for young girls.
Outside of work, I’ve continued to give back through volunteering—supporting women and children at a Cook County shelter, coaching volleyball to broaden access for underrepresented athletes, and serving as a Big through Big Brothers Big Sisters.
For the past three years, I’ve been part of LEAD United—and now, I’m honored to serve as Chair. Through LEAD, I’ve learned more deeply about the often invisible barriers people in our community face. I feel privileged to be in a position to help break those down—whether through emergency housing assistance or simply shining a light on realities others might not see.
Columbus is where I’ve planted roots, and it’s where I see my future. I believe in being part of the solution—stepping in when I see a need and working alongside others to help our community thrive. Through LEAD United, I hope to continue that mission—educating, supporting, and standing up for those who need it most.
