For one local high school student, each day was a challenge.
Hunger made it hard to focus in class, and with no money in his lunch account, he could only watch his classmates eat. The cold winter mornings were tough too—he stood at the bus stop shivering, without a proper coat or gear.
Repeated applications sent home for free and reduced lunch went unanswered, leaving his lunch tray empty. Studies show that when basic needs like food and clothing aren’t met, students face major challenges in concentrating, staying on track academically, and even graduating high school—leading to an all-too-familiar cycle of poverty.
The teen’s iGrad Coach—a dedicated professional who supports students on their path to graduation -- noticed the teen wasn’t eating and took action, bringing him tuna packets and popcorn daily. But he was still hungry.
The iGrad Coach turned to United Way of Bartholomew County’s Student Support Line—a vital resource designed to meet students' basic needs. By stepping in to provide essentials like food and clothing, United Way of Bartholomew County enables educators to focus on their mission: teaching and guiding children toward success.
United Way of Bartholomew County staff acted quickly, loading money onto the student’s lunch account and providing him with a warm coat and winter accessories. The change was immediate.
“It’s heartwarming to see him enjoying lunch alongside his classmates in the cafeteria,” the iGrad Coach shared.
Meeting basic needs does more than address immediate challenges—it restores dignity, fosters inclusion, and reminds kids that they are seen, valued, and loved. These small yet significant acts can transform a student’s outlook and help break the cycle of poverty for good.
