"I know a family that could really use this."

This appeared as a Letter to the Editor in The Republic newspaper.

There is a powerful sculpture at the United Way Bartholomew County building that serves as a moving reminder of our shared humanity. Regardless of height, skin color, gender, background, wealth, or circumstances, we are all bound by the same basic human spirit. This sculpture celebrates the resilience and dignity that exists in all of us, regardless of the circumstances of our varied lives.

The sculpture, intended for display in the United Way Bartholomew County headquarters was purchased for $300, and has a remarkable story behind it. The artist—who is a homeless man —chose to donate $100 of the payment to the United Way, simply stating, “The United Way is a very respected organization doing good work.” The sculpture itself was designed, built, and carefully reconstructed to fit in the building by this artist from Columbus, whose talent is impossible to ignore. Known for his extraordinary bike and cart creations, he transforms discarded materials into stunning works of art.

What makes this story even more powerful is the artist’s response after being paid the $200 balance for his work. Despite his own hardships, he selflessly paused and said, “I know a family that could really use this.” This simple yet profound act of generosity speaks to the artist’s ability to show compassion, despite his own challenges.

Homelessness is a complex issue in Columbus, sparking debates and emotional conversations. The United Way has worked tirelessly to help those affected, providing invaluable support and guidance to the roughly 120 homeless encampments in the area. Through their Avenues to Opportunity Program, they have successfully lifted nearly 200 families out of poverty and provided stable housing to over 20 previously homeless individuals.

Helping people transition from homelessness to stable housing is no small feat. It involves overcoming immense challenges—securing identification, setting up utilities, navigating job searches without a fixed address, and more. But despite these difficulties, the United Way has achieved remarkable successes, offering hope and a path forward for those in need.

This sculpture is a testament to the human spirit’s resilience. It shows that no matter the circumstances, we all have the capacity to create, to give, and to make a difference. The artist’s work is a reminder that beauty and purpose can emerge from adversity, and that we are all on this journey together, facing obstacles but moving forward with hope.
